Brain, Pituitary & Orbit Tumors Q & A

What are the ocular symptoms of brain and pituitary tumors?

The brain is restricted in how much it can expand by the skull that surrounds it. When a tumor of the brain or the pituitary gland (located in the brain) becomes large, it can begin to press on the nerves that affect vision. In most cases, vision loss develops slowly, usually beginning with a gradual loss of peripheral vision which may be difficult to detect at first. Eventually, loss of vision can progress to affect complete vision, resulting in blindness if left untreated. Tumors can also press on the nerves that help the eyes move, resulting in diplopia or double vision.

What are the symptoms of orbit tumors?

There are several types of orbit tumors, including orbital lymphoma, orbital sarcoma, orbital meningioma and metastatic orbit tumors. Orbit tumors can cause signs and symptoms such as bumps or nodules around the eye or eyelid, protrusion of the eye, loss of vision and discomfort.

How are these tumors treated?

The treatment will depend on the type of tumor and where it's located. In some pituitary tumors, for instance, when no symptoms are present, careful watching may be used to ensure the tumor doesn't grow larger. Other types of tumors may require surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. In some cases where the tumor is large, growing or spreading, it may cause the loss of the eye. Dr. Bose is skilled in diagnosing tumors that affect vision and the eye. He uses diagnostic imaging and lab testing to determine the type of tumor and its extent to ensure the best approach is used for proper treatment and optimal results.
